Casa Noni sits on the edge of the Ostional Wildlife Refuge — 15 km of protected coastline where sea turtles nest by the thousand, howler monkeys wake you at dawn, and one of the most consistent surf breaks on Earth rolls in ten minutes away. The turtles are also why this coast stayed wild: the refuge keeps the beachfront free of development, so the jungle runs straight down to the sand.

Ostional Wildlife Refuge
A few nights at a time, the sea turns to shell. Thousands of olive ridley turtles — sometimes hundreds of thousands — haul themselves out of the surf at Ostional to nest in a mass event called la arribada, "the arrival". It's one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on the planet, and it happens just up the coast from Casa Noni.
Arribadas happen year-round, roughly monthly and loosely following the moon, with the biggest between August and November. Ostional is also one of the only places on Earth where the village may legally harvest eggs — only in the first 36 hours, when later arrivals would dig up the nests anyway — in a community-run program that helps protect the beach.
Visits during an arribada are with a certified local guide — no flash, no lights on the beach.
Playa Guiones
Guiones is one of the most consistent beach breaks in the world: waves on more than 330 days a year, a soft sand bottom, and around seven kilometres of beach so there's always a peak to yourself. Beginners learn in the whitewash while experienced surfers pick off the outside sets.
Bigger south swells roll in from May to October. December to April brings smaller, glassier waves and steady offshore winds — perfect for learning. Whatever the season, the sunset session is a ritual.
